Excerpt from Romeo Otter of Friends

CISSY   What? (confronts Ted) You were in on this? (angrily) You big creep! You stupid.stupid.man. (she hits him with her clenched fists against his chest, but after a few hits, he grabs her wrists and pushes her away) You traitor! You knew this was going to happen! That's why you didn't want to come back here.

TED   Yes, that true! I'm getting sick and tired of being bossed around by Spencer all the time.I'm getting sick and tired of being his gofer. I wanna be my own boss from now on.

STONEY   Come on, man. let's get going.

Ted stops his ranting and raving. He looks at Cissy who stares back at him without saying anything. They can still hear the motorcycles coming closer.

STONEY   Come on, man.we gotta hurry.

TED   (walks towards Stoney who is now waiting by the corner at the sidestreet, but he stops halfway to the corner and turns around to look at Cissy again) Cissy, come with me.we'll be okay.

CISSY   No. I will not go with you.

TED   But, baby.

CISSY   No. I cannot live with a traitor. I have to live with somebody I can trust.

STONEY   Come on , man. (Ted slowly turns and follows Stoney. They go around the corner of the side-street)

Romeo and Cissy remain alone in the cafe. They stand and listen as the noise of the motorcycles becomes louder and louder, almost to the point of ear-deafening. Suddenly, the noise stops.

ROMEO   What happened?

CISSY   I think Stoney has just met the motorcycle gang that he wanted so bad.

ROMEO   What will happen?

CISSY   Who knows.   (she walks towards the corner of the sidestreet) I suppose.Stoney.and Ted.will fight with the motorcycle people. (she stands at the corner and appears to be looking around past the corner. Slowly she turns and walks down the little sidestreet) They will lose.

Cissy now walks a little briskly down the little sidewalk, turns to her left and starts towards off stage right.

ROMEO   Cissy! (Cissy stops in her tracks)

CISSY   (turning towards Romeo) What?

ROMEO   What will you do. now?

CISSY   I don't know. stay here I guess.

ROMEO   I wanna deal.

CISSY   You wanna deal? (Romeo nods his head) What deal?

ROMEO   Give me a break. (Cissy laughs) Come home with me. for a while. see how you like! If you still no like me and Birch Lake, then you come back here.

CISSY   Oh Romeo, you mean. you still want to be with me? After all that's happened?   (Romeo nods his head) Okay. (Happily they embrace. They hold hands and start to leave, but Romeo suddenly stops. He walks back to the chair where the guitar is still propped up and picks up the guitar)

ROMEO   (walking back towards Cissy) I must never lose this guitar. It means something to me. (He rejoins Cissy and together they leave the cafe for the last time)
