Danespotting had the top attendance at the Montreal Fringe Festival in 1997. As MacFadzean explained in a 1997 interview with David Gobeil Taylor, "It's sort of a Hamlet meets Trainspotting love story, remaining true to Shakespeare but with a modern spin. We started out wanting to write a story about Hamlet and Ophelia because these are characters who are very true and dear to us. Then we made the connection between them and more modern lovers like Sid and Nancy." Like MacFadzean's other adaptation, richardthesecond: a nightmare, Danespotting uses media--a fast-paced soundtrack to be specific--to present Shakespeare to modern audiences.

Taylor, David Gobeil. "The quintessence of Fringe: Danespotting prepares to suffer the slings and arrows of underground theatre." Montreal Mirror 12 Jun. 1997. 14 Jan. 2002.
