"Exit, Pursued by a Bear"

Gordon Lester

Gordon Lester

Gordon Lester is an untrained conceptual artist from Brampton, Ontario. His series "Exit, Pursued by a Bear" is based on a stage direction from The Winter's Tale (3.3.57), perhaps the most famous stage direction in English drama. Portraits of figures from "high" literary and critical theory are placed within this imaginary Shakespearean context.

From September 2002 to April 2003, Lester was roommates with Canadian artist Eryn Foster, who was pursuing her MFA at the University of Guelph. She was the one who encouraged him to try painting, posting his early work on the refrigerator door. Through Eryn "Fester," Lester was introduced to her MFA cohort that included Leah Garnett, Ryan Suter, and Katie Bethune-Leamen.

The show was painted quickly: the 15 paintings were completed in a week, including 5 in one day.

The original series was exhibited at the Red Dot Gallery at the University of Guelph on March 13, 2003.
