'Moving Performances'

This collection of images was assembled from dance and movement performance adaptations of Shakespeare. As Mark Fortier notes in his article on Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers' adaptation, there is a long tradition of setting Shakespeare to music, including Verdi's Otello and Falstaff and Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet (45). Included here are images from The Garden (2001), Tom Stroud's dance adaptation of Hamlet; The Faerie Queen (2000), the ballet adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream by John Murrell and John Alleyne; and Aureola Part 1: Prologue (1998), a movement performance art adaptation of Measure for Measure by Chad Demski. all these performances posit the question of the extent to which the verbal play that is so much a part of Shakespearean theatre can be translated by movement and gestural language. Adaptive contexts that "move" Shakespeare into the choreographed space of the body on stage suggest an extended notion of adaptation as a material practice of re-inscription.
