Biography |
"Gordon McCall – Artistic & Executive Director, Centaur Theatre Company.
Now in his sixth season as Artistic and Executive Director of Centaur Theatre Company, Gordon is the holder of a Master of Fine Arts degree in Directing from the University of British Columbia. For the past twenty-nine years he has worked as a director, actor, playwright, screenwriter, educator, producer, and Artistic Director across Canada, in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Dublin, Ireland. He is also the founding or first artistic director of several important Canadian theatres – Vancouver’s Touchstone Theatre, Saskatoon’s Shakespeare On The Saskatchewan Festival and Winnipeg’s Prairie Theatre Exchange.
In 1981, Gordon directed the renowned production of The Ecstasy of Rita Joe starring Tom Jackson for The Prairie Theatre Exchange. In 1990, Gordon directed the internationally acclaimed bilingual production of Romeo & Juliette with Robert Lepage for his Shakespeare On The Saskatchewan Company, The Stratford Festival, The World Stage Festival and the National Arts Centre. In 1998, Gordon directed the award-winning English-language World Premiere of Michel Tremblay’s For The Pleasure of Seeing Her Again. Following its sold out run at Centaur, the show toured to major theatres across Canada and was presented as part of the 50th anniversary season of Washington D.C.’s Arena Stage.
In January 2002, Gordon directed the European premiere of the same play with an all-Irish cast at The Abbey Theatre in Dublin, Ireland. This marked the first time that a Canadian play was produced at Ireland’s National Theatre. In January 2003, he will direct Centaur’s record-breaking production of Mambo Italiano by Montreal playwright Steve Galluccio as part of the Ed and David Mirvish Productions season in Toronto. Other notable productions Gordon has directed for Centaur include, Angels in America, Parts 1 & 2, The Crucible, Twelfth Night, Venus of Dublin, The Gin Game, Driving Miss Daisy, How I Learned To Drive, & The Weir.
In addition to occasional film roles, Gordon continues his career as a popular stage actor, most recently receiving acclaim for his performance as Gabe in Centaur’s production of Dinner With Friends by Donald Margulies. In addition to his many duties as Artistic & Executive Director of Centaur, Gordon enjoys producing Centaur’s Wildside Festival and spearheading the Centaur Showcase Fringe Festival jury. He is also in demand throughout Montreal as a public speaker and educator. Most recently, Gordon was appointed to the Board of Directors of The National Theatre School of Canada.
