Biography |
"Judith Rudakoff has worked as a developmental dramaturg on three continents as well as maintaining an active profile as a writer, educator and contemporary theatre historian for two decades. Her new work creation methodologies using The Four Elements, archetypal mythologies and Russian LOMO photography have been used in England, Cuba, South Africa and at York University, where she coordinates the graduate and undergraduate playwriting and new play dramaturgy programmes. Judith is the only foreigner declared an Honourary Member of Cuba's Teatro Escambray and her play, Sin Tenen, was the first Canadian play produced professionally in Cuba" (qtd. from 25 Oct. 2003. http://www.puc.ca/cgi-bin/puc/catalogue.cgi?function=detail&Authors_uid=287). |

| Synopsis |
Pere Ubu is a commandant in the country of Arcadia, a servant of King Wensesname and his family. But Mere Ubu has aspirations for her husband - she pushes him to murder the royal family and seize the crown. With the aid of allies, the cowardly Pere Ubu takes the crown and becomes a dictator. He quickly crumbles when Arcadia's Prince Bougrelas fights to regain the throne. Like Hamlet, he has to be pushed to action by the ghost of his slain father. After fleeing to the Arctic, Mere and Pere Ubu sail to freedom in America. |

| Notes |
Translations and productions of Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi test the boundaries of what can be considered adaptations of Shakespeare. We have included productions of Ubu Roi because they are adaptations of Jarry's adaptation of Macbeth and because they have been produced so many times in Canada. |
