Biography |
"As Artistic Director of Nipissing Stage Company, North Bay's professional summer theatre company, Rod has directed Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Rumors, The Passion of Dracula, The Petrified Forest, Moon Over Buffalo, Wait Until Dark, as well as serving as co-author/director on the original musical Train Town and dramaturge/director on last season's original musical Indian Heart. This past season he directed Room Service, Wrong For Each Other, The Cripple of Inishmaan, and the premiere of the rock musical Shadflies & Shotguns.
"He has directed and produced over seventy productions to date, both nationally and internationally, ranging from the classics to the development of new Canadian work. He spent two seasons with the Stratford Festival as resident Assistant Director and was the first recipient of the Festival's Jean Gascon Director's Award; he also recieved a Tyrone Guthrie Award. He was nominated for the first John Hirsch Director's Award in 1993 and in 1997 was short-listed for the Pauline McGibbon Award for his body of work to date.
"He has free-lance directed across the country doing summer stock, regional theatre, musicals, summer festivals, university and college productions, and community outreach programs through Theatre Ontario. His adaptation and direction of The Othello Project earned him a 1996 DORA Award Nomination for Outstanding Direction as well as a 1998 Carbonnell Award Nomination for Outstanding Direction (Florida Shakespeare Festival, Miami). His adaptation and production of King Lear earned a 1992 DORA Award Nomination. He directed the premieres of Jason Sherman's first work, A Place Like Pamela, at the Tarragon Theatre, and David Widdicombe's Dinosaur Dreams for the Factory Theatre. He served on Crow's Theatre Board of Directors in Toronto for two years and was responsible for assisting new play development. Since moving to North Bay three years ago to form Nipissing Stage, Rod has been committed to developing the work of northern Ontario writers. He has directed and dramaturged James Stewart's The Ezekiel Complex and Fractured at the White Water Gallery.
"Recently Rod directed the Northern Ontario premiere of High Life earning him an Outstanding Direction Award and Production award at the 2002 Quebec / Northern Ontario Theatre Festival.
"As an instructor, Rod has been a sessional professor with Nipissing University for the past four years, a Guest Artist with the University of Windsor (four years) and George Brown Theatre School (three years), and has taught workshops for the Stratford Festival, Equity Showcase, Artsperience, Theatre Ontario, and school boards throughout the province. | Synopsis |
The Othello Project marks Walking Shadow Theatre's most daring and powerful project to date, a driving and uncompromising study of man's basest instincts. The play unfolds deep in the American South during the height of the civil rights movement. The year is 1964 and Mississippi is ablaze with racial unrest. Set against this backdrop, The Othello Project takes on frightening and immediate relevance. Othello is the leader of a Northern F.B.I. team investigating reports of racial violence in the Klan-dominated town of Cypress, Mississippi. When Iago, his trusted, ally is overlooked for a job promotion, Iago's dashed hopes turn to revenge as he plots Othello's downfall. Using the Mississippi environment to his advantage, Iago preys on Othello's hidden doubts and paranoia. Convinced that his wife, Desdemona, has been unfaithful, Othello's obsessive jealousy leads to a tragic trial of murder and suicide" (qtd. from Press Release, 1995). |
