Biography |
"Alberta -based playwright/translator born in Texas in 1945.
"He came to Canada in 1968 and graduated from the University of Calgary. He began writing plays for his students when he was a teacher in public schools in Alberta.
"His first play, Haydn's Head, won a provincial prize but it was with Power in the Blood, the 1975 Clifford E. Lee Award winner, that he began to write full time.
"He became playwright in residence for Alberta Theatre Projects (1975-75) and while there wrote Waiting For The Parade (Alberta Theatre Projects, 1977, directed by Douglas Riske ), perhaps his most popular play.
"His play, Memoir (National Arts Centre 1978), was directed by Pam Brighton and John Wood, starring Edward Atienza as Pitou, and Denise Fergusson as Sarah. Other works, New World (National Arts Centre, 1984, Robin Phillips), Farther West (Theatre Calgary, 1982, Robin Phillips) and The Faraway Nearby (Tarragon Theatre, 1995, Joanna McIntyre) have received productions across the nation. Waiting for the Parade, Farther West and The Faraway Nearby all won him the Chalmers Award . He was an associate director of the Stratford Festival (1977-78) and in 1988 was appointed head of the Canada Council 's theatre section to 1992.
"In 1985 he became head of the playwright's colony at the Banff Centre for The Arts (to 1989); since 1999 he has been serving as Centre's Artistic Director/Executive Producer of theatre.
